Swinehart recounts how the first time he got high was in 13. By high school, he was smoking crack and being a “blackout drinker.” Drugs became his identity. In 1999, he was addicted to heroin and soon, homeless in San Francisco. But that’s not his whole story or his whole identity anymore.
